It all starts with a CHOICE

so what is addiction? What about it make its so 'uncontrolable' an for some, unbearable to stop?

Every addictions starts with a choice, if you never choose to do that in the first place it cannot affect you. "No individual raindrop considers itself responsible for the flood." but it is also the repetition of what at first formed a habit an later formed an addiction, you don't know if it will be the first time you do something, it could be the 50th time. moral of the story don't try it.
Addiction; is finding an activity rather bad or indifferent, that one cannot stop doing, because over a laps of time they have not chosen to discontinue doing this 'habit'
bad addictions:
  • Self harm (1 of 200 U.S citizens
  • Alcohol (1 of 4 U.S citizens)
  • Smoking(1 of 10 U.S citizens)
  • Heroine, marijuana, and other illegal drugs
  • Anorexia (1 of 200 U.S citizens)
  • Bulimia (1 of 100 U.S citizens)
  • Gambling (1 of 4 U.S. citizens)
  • Caffeine
addictions are not normally classified as good because when it becomes a true addictions thoughts of such an action can take over your life. But don't misunderstand, good things can become addictions as well.

So wait, then if it is a choice why can't people stop, if they choose to start they can choose to stop right?
well on this side of the spectrum that would be true, but many people relapse an often need 'help'. Which is never wrong, but there are a lot of people out there afraid to ask for help. Because in today's society addiction is looked down upon as there are people who believe it is an arrogant choice.

  1. My grandfather died from smoking and a guy i used to know is in jail for cocaine and other drugs that I don't understand his reason for coming back to them. But like you said "It all starts with a CHOICE"... Not everyone is the same though some can start and stop with ease some have an extremely hard time, its that feeling of wanting to quit and will power, in my opinion.

  2. Addiction itself is most definately a disease, but it does all start with a choice on that person's part. Unless they were born with an addiction.

  3. I agree in that it was always the person's choice to first try it. No question addiction is a disease but it is a disease that i feel can very easily be avoided.

  4. I really liked your topic because I never really gave much thought to that before. I agree that it all starts with a choice because, like Norbert said, if they weren't born with the addiction, then it is their own fault for making a series of such bad decisions. Also, your information was really well put together and I like the organization of your blog.

  5. Addiction is a serious matter. I don't understand why people that were once addicted and are now clean, decided to take those drugs again. Everyone needs to read this blog so they think before they make certain choices.

  6. Personally I don't think addiction is a disease.I know what the definition of disease is and it does sound like a reasonable characteristic that could define addiction.Addiction is difficult to quit for some people. For others it is as easy as not smoking anymore. For example, my grandfather recently heard that his best friend has cancer, from smoking. My grandfather has quit smoking and hasn't smoked since. He didn't need any treatment, medical attention or help.He has been smoking since he was 15 years old, multiple packs a day.I believe it is the motivation that allows people to quit.If you have a disease motivation wont help you at all.It just wont. You will still need treatment and medical attention to help cope with the symptoms or get rid of the disease. Most people don't have the motivation or drive that will allow them to quit.Addiction is not permanent.I think that is the main aspect that you are missing. There is a huge difference between addiction and disease.

  7. Addiction is a touchy subject in today's society especially with Big Tobacco trying to put it off. Some people are born with addiction in their genetics however most addictions are a person's own fault. Personally I think if they chose to start a bad habit it, it should be their responsibility to rid themselves of the habit.

  8. Addiction can be a horrible thing. Especially when the addiction is so unhealthy for you. If you make the right decision in the first place then addiction shouldn't be a problem.
